Smithfield Chess tournament |
Ten players competed in Smithfield Township’s U.S. Chess Federation (USCF) / Scholastic chess tournament, hosted by Pack 92 at the new Smithfield Township Municipal Building last Saturday. The matches followed a five-round Swiss System Game/30 format for both novices and rated players.

USCF Class A player Eric Mark, shown at left (dark blue shirt), played all competitors in a Simultaneous round, while former U.S. Amateur Chess Champion Dennis Dawley, of Hackettstown Chess Club (yellow shirt), provided after-match analysis to help each player improve his game.
Mehkye Aultman of Mount Pocono was the grand winner, shown here with event organizer and Class A player Michael Laverty; Aultman finished with 5 out of 5 points. The other top finishers were: (shown left to right with Laverty) Emmanuel Kang, Kieran Laverty, Samuel Kang, Kyle Jorstad, Kilian Laverty, and Naveen Ailawadi.
Trophies and medals were awarded in each category, along with generously donated door prizes from Shawnee Mtn. Ski Resort, Sherman Theater, Shawnee Playhouse and Pocono Cinema. All proceeds benefitted Pack 92, which also thanks Hot Bagel and local Weis markets for providing refreshments, and the township for letting us use the new facilities.
